The Dismantling of India

India, I am not sure how long we will be calling the land that we are living in as India and call ourselves as Indians, but for the time that there is left, T.J.S George brings us the lives of the 35 Indians who created an impact on India. Starting from Tatas to Narendra Modi, this book is an account on the lives of people and the circumstances that created them! It talks about the shift of politics and lives in India, and with these portraits takes you thorough the journey of India.

Should you read this book? Well, for someone who has turned their eye towards what is happening around, I would suggest this to be a good book. You will get to know about Bal Tachkery early days, how Tatas shaped India, be introduced to Sanjay Gandhi, Verappan, M.F Hussain, Harshad Mehta, Rana Ayyub and others. So, in my understanding this book could be considered a starter for those who want to savour the flavours of India, you will find yourself meeting people and getting to know the stories that in some ways did form India. Although there are lot of people that could have been included as well, however considering the limitations that present themselves, it seemed appropriate.

The stories that impacted me the most were of Ustaad Vilayat Khan, Nambi Narayan and J.R.D Tata! But if I were to tell you , what I gained from it, I would say not everything is what it seems to be! Sometimes people make their names in history because they had power, and not particularly because of skill. Sometimes people who created more impact do get left out in the conventional history books, because of how they chose to portray themselves. So, may be we don’t need to always go for what it is shown, but rather find for ourselves, people who we would wish to follow!

Foolishly Yours,
Anmol/Avantika
