I went to my neighbor’s house yesterday and I was chatting with the elder sister (she had her birthday) and even her younger sister was there. You see I don’t have a phone these days( I have broken the earlier one) and I was asking the elder sister about new phones and what is her opinion on the different hand sets. While the discussion was going on, her younger sister said,” You know buy this one, most probably I will also buy it.” And I was like,” You will buy it!!” like for what! You are in 10th class, you already have a phone and you will buy a new phone. She said,” I will buy because my current phone doesn’t clicks good photos and neither has a front camera!”.To be true, I was in a state of shock. You know when you see something happening, it is quite difficult not to compare it with your circumstances. I was lost in the thought, that when I was in 10th, forget about camera phone, I did not had any phone and there seemed no necessity. The entire thing just struck me. Like come on, I don’t have a phone even now and she, bloody she is getting a phone and that to worth 15000.
I tried forgetting it when today a kid( whom I teach) came along with his mother and she was like I am buying laptop for him and he is asking for Internet. What should I do? I like a very nice girl gave her the advice to get a router set in her house because that will be far better than a dongle. And she said yes, but what if he uses facebook and all. And he said, “So, what!! I am going to use them”.
I don’t know. To me he is like in class 8th. He has all his friends nearby. They all spend a huge amount of time together, why need facebook then! Ain’t facebook for those whose friends are far away and so they can be in touch!! I am not against the Internet thing. I think Internet is really exciting because it gives you a lot more knowledge than you might get otherwise. There are fantastic blogs, awesome videos, great courses, everything, that can keep you ahead of time, but facebook at the age of 14!! I don’t know!
Even more, selfies are like what!! I won’t support them even amongst elders (I really don’t get the idea of clicking a dumb photo of yours and then posting it and then getting shitty comments like gr8 or mst or wow(why the hell can’t you type the whole damn shit!!)).
But either ways, a class 10th girl is more concerned about her facebook profile picture or her watsapp status, rather than the test she has tomorrow scares me. The boy who should be fighting with her mother to let her play outside is fighting to play FIFA in Internet, irritates me.
And most importantly I am confused. To me it sounds weird. Internet is good. Good if you use if to get knowledge. Say for example, kids see a nice video on you tube and then discuss it with each other. It could be funny or may be something important. But a 10th class or a 8th class kid fighting to get a phone or Internet to do facebook or play Internet games or whats app is weired to me.
May be I am talking like some old aunty or may be this is the Internet age. The time when instead of playing real football, kids are more interested in playing FIFA in their X-box. The age when rather than meeting real friends, kids are more interested in talking on facebook. The times when instead of teasing friends or beating them, people are more interested in poking or commenting on them.
I don’t know. I am confused. Confused as to, am I talking like the shitty aunty from late 80s or is it really a concern! Is it actually like something that people in the name of modernization are doing? Like killing the innocence of the kids? I don’t know if I should even use such big words?? I don’t know if it is really a concern or a big slim girl getting mad over the new world of Internet and its effects!!
