There are movies that you watch, you enjoy them, have a laugh or may be they scare you a bit, you talk about them and then you let them go! And then come along those movies, on a random Sunday when you are just covering your books, or not feeling well when you randomly select a movie, the kind of movies tha make a home in your heart. The ones that make you appreciate art, make you appreciate the dialogues, the writers, the actor, you see the subtle hints and they make you come back for more. You search for their directors, the names of the actors, what other work the actors have done, the best of all is when you go to reddit pages for the movie!

Bulbul is that kind of movie, the kind of movie that makes you watch it again and again, sometimes in bits and parts, you go for the pieces that you enjoyed the most. You share reels of it in your group chat, you wonder and question whether what you understood of it matches with what others think of it! It makes you question your world.

The movie starts at the backdrop of child marriage, a child (Bulbul) getting married to someone 25 years elder to her(Indranil). Bulbul becomes friends with Satya( Indranil’s younger brother) who is of the same age as her. And then we have Mahindra who is the twin brother of Indranil, clinically mad, married to Binodini.

You then watch the movie through the eyes of Bulbul, through her innocence and then smartness. The journey of her becoming an adult, of letting go of her childlike nature, of adjusting to the traumatic world she gets married into.

You will feel love, empathy, sometimes hatred, sometimes pity, all for her, but in the end the most that you will feel is pride. Bulbul takes you on an inner journey where you find yourself questioning if the reality of this movie exists in our real world, and each time you find it in your world, you will feel shivers down your throat.

This is the story of a girl who deals with loss of love, of being brutally beaten up, of getting raped and then finally killed. It is the journey of the girl becoming a woman and finally becoming a phoenix.
