Respect and empathy! Two words that I have dealt with almost all my life, and never quite understood the meaning of it! May be they are that complex or the fact that they are subjective, that changes everything about and around it! But today when I read the book, I could relate to some of the things, I think I had been practicing them all this way long! The author tries to explain the concept of respect, and although the student says that respect means doing whatever the other person is saying, the author denies! In addition, he suggests that respect is something that must be given to everybody and not just your elders and in no ways is it a way of showing power. To put simply, respect means to look at people for who they are, and accept them for what they are! You do not bring in any judgements or prejudices, or your plan of actions for their lives. So, for example, if you see a kid who is playing video games, you look at it from the eyes as though you are seeing an adult who knows what they are doing. You may then advice or suggest but not force someone.
The author then talks about empathy. So, when you are looking at the other person, and that is with respect for them being an individual, you also bring in the empathy side to it! You try to answer why someone is doing what they are doing! You understand them for what they are and what their circumstances could be, based on that your interaction goes!
This well, as I understood, applies to most of the cases. I would not say all of the cases, because after all there are definitely extremist, often individuals ignored in the initial stages, but baring them, I have definitely come to a conclusion or a affirmation, that life is indeed about respecting or rather looking at individual or societies for who they are and accepting them for whatever they choose to be! To empathise with them and to redirect them to better choices and options in life. Doing this will save relationships. Moreover, when we say that you accept it, you need not necessarily to have to accept the person or accept the society or government, you need to accept the situation, and actions of them, you understand on what is happening and why it is! Trust me on this, knowing the answers is always better than looking at things with black , with your own tinted glasses!
