There are people who buy a book after a lot of research, there are some who buy it based on the name of it, some buy it based on what they read in the end of it, some buy it based on author. For me buying a book is like a spiritual process. When I go to buy book I meditate, have a small talk with Universe which usually goes like “Please universe, please, tell me which book should I read this time, what is that you want to teach me, please suggest me a book” and while I do this and hover my hand over the different books that are present. Whenever my prayer stops, I check the book and mostly buy it. This might sound stupid to you, but honestly speaking I have bought the most life transformational books by this approach.
This time I am speaking about a book called “The First Time Manager” by Loren B. Belker, Jim MCCormick and Gary S. TopChick. For anyone, either becoming first time manager or starting a new business, this is a must read. I recently became manager and all the mistakes that were explained in this book, are the ones I already did. I could relate to them more and understand better.
Like in the beginning it said, there are some people who become first time managers and think it’s their job to do everything and then fail miserably. I was that person. Could not delegate anything! Then a line where it said, you should have cordial relations with your team but not be their best friend. I was that person. Somewhere it said, you should never give therapy while you are in the job, well I did, sometime took as well! Mistakes and failures, I learnt from!
But, what will you get from this book right? I don’t know. Because books are like nature, I could enjoy the sun more while you could enjoy the trees better. Completely on what you grasp. However, few things or quotes that I loved the most from this book, let me share them with you.
By controlling your stray thoughts, you can stay focused on the subject at hand, rather than on some extraneous idea.
People working for the autocrat believe they are working for someone while those reporting to the diplomat believe they are working with someone.
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN
You will learn the difference between delegation and dovetailing.
You will learn how to deal with appraisals better.
You will learn how to lead better and more importantly learn that the best manager is the one who is a complete person, so you need to have a life beyond work.
You learn how to manage team, how to deal with problematic people and how to encourage the above average ones.
You will learn how to manage your own time and understand risk.
Honestly, there is so much more!!
WHAT THIS BOOK IS NOT
This book is not the kind of book you read once and then sideline it. Also not the kind of book you need to read all at once. This is also not a bible on management.
WHAT KIND OF BOOK IS THIS!
Its your phone a friend kinda book. You don’t always read it, but you do keep checking upon it, not just in times of despair, but sometimes here and there, whenever life gives a chance. It is a good friend to have, a close friend to keep.
