IN BETWEEN CHAPTER QUESTIONS
What is a resource?
Anything that can be used to satisfy a need is called a resource.
What makes a substance resource?
Utility or usage is what makes a substance resource.
What do you mean by value?
Value means worth.
What do you mean by patent?
Patent is an exclusive right over any idea or invention.
What factors are responsible for changing a substance to a resource?
Time and technology are factors that change a substance to a resource.
What do you mean by technology?
Technology is the application of the latest knowledge and skill in making and doing things.
What are the types of resources?
Resources are generally classified into natural, human made and human.
What are natural resources?
Resources that have been derived from nature and are used without much modification are called natural resources.
Give examples of natural resources?
The air we breathe, the water in our rivers and lakes, the soils, the minerals are all natural resources.
What are the types of natural resources?
Natural resources are classified into three groups based on their level of development and use; origin; stock and distribution.
On the basis of development, how are natural resources classified?
On the basis of their development and use, resources can be classified into two groups, actual resources and potential resources.
What are actual resources?
Actual resources are those whose quantity is known and are currently being used. For example – the rich deposits of coal in Ruhr region in Germany and petroleum in West Asia, the dark soils of the Deccan plateau in Maharashtra.
What are potential resources?
Potential resources are those whose entire quantity might not be known and are not being used in present because of either technology lack or presence of other alternatives. For example – the uranium found in Ladakh.
Name two states where wind mills are present in India.
Tamil Nadu and Gujarat
How are resources classified on the basis of origin.
On the basis of origin, resources can either be biotic or abiotic.
What are abiotic and biotic resources? Give examples.
Abiotic resources are non-living while biotic resources are living. For example, soils, rocks and minerals are abiotic while plants and animals are biotic.
How are natural resources classified on the basis of distribution?
On the basis of distribution, natural resources can be ubiquitous or localised.
What are ubiquitious resources?
Resources that are found everywhere like the air we breathe are called ubiquitious resources.
What are localised resources?
Resources that are found in certain areas are called localised resources. For example, copper and iron ore.
On what factors are distribution of resources depends?
Distribution of resources depends on number of physical factors like terrain, climate and altitude.
What is meant by stock of resources?
Stock or resources means the amount of resources available to us.
Classify natural resources broadly.
Broadly, natural resources are of two types, renewable resources and non-renewable resources.
What are renewable resource?
Renewable resources are those which get renewed or replenished quickly. Some of these are unlimited and not affected by human activities like solar and wind energy. However, careless use of natural resources has led to the depletion or scarcity of some of them like water.
What are non-renewable resources?
Non-renewable resources are those which have a limited stock. Once the stocks are exhausted it may take thousands of years to get replenished. Since the time taken by these resources to renew themselves is more than the human life span they are considered non-renewable resources. Example- coal, petroleum and natural gas.
What are human made resources?
When humans use the natural resources and modify them using their intelligence to make them usable, resources are called human made resources. Example – technology.
What are human resources?
People can make use of their skills and knowledge to create more resources. Therefore, they are considered as a resource themselves and are called human resources.
What is human resource development?
Improving the quality of people’s skills so that they are able to create more resources is known as human resource development.
What is meant by human resource?
Human resource refers to the number(quantity) and abilities (physical and mental) of the people.
What is resource conservation?
Using resources carefully and giving them time to get renewed is called resource conservation.
What is sustainable development?
Balancing the need to use resources and conserve them for future is called sustainable development.
As the citizens of this planet, what are the responsibilities that everyone living in it shares?
It is the duty of every individual living in this planet to ensure that
- all uses of renewable resources are sustainable.
- the diversity of life on the earth is conserved.
- the damage to natural environmental system is minimized.
What are the principles of sustainable development?
Some of the principles of sustainable development are –
- Respect and care for all forms of life.
- Improve the quality of human life.
- Conserve the earth’s vitality and diversity.
- Minimize the depletion of natural resources.
- Change personal attitude and practices towards environment.
- Enable communities to care for their own environment.
EXERCISES
1. Answer the following questions –
(i ) Why are resources distributed unequally over Earth?
Answer – The distribution of natural resources depends upon number of physical factors like terrain, climate and altitude. The distribution of resources is unequal because these factors differ so much on Earth.
(ii) What is resource conservation?
Answer – Using resources carefully and giving them time to get renewed is called resource conservation.
(iii) Why are human resources important?
Answer- People can make the best use of nature to create more resources when they have the knowledge, skill and technology to do so. That is why human beings are a special resource.
(iv) What is sustainable development?
Balancing the need to use resources and also conserve them for future is called sustainable development.
2. Tick the correct answer –
(i) Which one of the following does NOT make a substance a resource?
(a) utility (b) value (c) quantity
Answer – c. quantity
(ii) Which one of the following is a human made resource?
(a) medicines to treat cancer
(b) spring water
(c) tropical forest
Answer – a. medicines to treat cancer
(iii) Complete the statement.
Biotic resources are
(a) derived from living things
(b)made by human beings
(c)derived from non-living things
Answer – a. derived from living things.
3. Differentiate between the followings.
(a) Potential and actual resources
| Potential Resources | Actual resources |
|---|---|
| Potential resources are those whose entire quantity may not be known. | Actual resources are those whose quantity is known. |
| These resources may be used in future. | These resources are currently being used. |
| Example- Ruhr region of Germany | Example – Uranium found in Ladakh. |
(b) Ubiquitous and localized resources
| Ubiquitous Resources | Localized Resources |
|---|---|
| Resources that are found everywhere are called ubiquitous resources. | Resources found only in certain places are called localized resources. |
| Example- air we breathe | Example- copper or iron |
