Cognos allows you to create different kinds of charts for reporting. It could be either pie chart, line chart or any other. With line chart it is quite simple, all you need to do is figure out the X-axis, Y-axis. But with the pie chart there is this thing called series. But what is series and why is it even there??

Well, in a pie chart the X-axis and the Y-axis correspond to the normal fundamental x and y axis that we have learnt about in Math. The series column however is different. The data item that you put in series defines the way your chart will be colored. So, for example you have put employee full name on the series, then the conditional formatting that you will apply onto the chart will differ on the basis of the employee’s full name. If you put amount in series, for every different amount, the colors in the chart will change.

So, figure out on basis on what you want to color your chart and put it in Series column.
