How Does Data Moves In Informatica

For the beginners, Informatica sounds like a simple tool where you first create mappings, run them, then create sessions and then workflows, connect the work flow and the session using links and run. The output is then checked from the server. But, do you know exactly what is happening and what does it means when you create those links between different tables and what is this mapping thing all about??

Initially, you bring the source to the Informatica server. So, in the source analyzer you are simply telling the server that hey listen, the table I am talking about is this..

Then you create the target tables.

The result from the source table gets transferred to the target table on the basis of the rules in the mappings and session meta data stored in the repository.

But then what is a session?? Well, a session is a set of instructions that tell how and when to move the data from the source to the target.

Coming Back.

When you start a session, Informatica Server retrieves mapping and the session meta data from the repository.

The following processes are used by the Informatica Server to run a session.

    1. Load Manager Process – It does three simple things –
      • Starts the session.
      • Creates the DTM process.
      • Send post-session email when session is completed.
  1. DTM Process -During this process the following things happen –
    • Create thread to initialize session.
    • Read, write and transform data.
    • Handle pre and post session operations.

NOTE- Informatica server runs as a daemon in UNIX and as a service on Windows NT/2000.

Happy Learning 🙂
